Context
The Government has relaxed FDI rules to encourage export-oriented
e-commerce.

Key Changes
● Earlier, FDI was allowed only in B2B and marketplace models,
where platforms could not own inventory.
● Foreign-funded e-commerce firms can now own inventory if the
goods are exclusively exported from India.
● The relaxation applies only to domestically manufactured goods
meant for export.
● Inventory-based e-commerce for the domestic retail market
remains prohibited.

Significance
● First major change in e-commerce FDI policy in nearly a decade.
● Aims to boost exports, expand global market access, and strengthen
India’s position in global e-commerce supply chains.
